AYSO Region 143

EXTRA BASICS

The EXTRA Program offers a more advanced level of competition for players who possess the appropriate skills, commitment and abilities. The program offers soccer development opportunities similar to club soccer but maintains the core AYSO philosophies – including a guarantee that they will play at least half of every game. Players are selected through a competitive tryout process.

TRYOUTS

  • All players must register for the tryout in advance.
  • The tryout is open to ALL players based on the birth year of each division.
  • ALL players (previous EXTRA players included) MUST attend at least one tryout to be considered for a team; attendance at both tryouts is encouraged.
  • There is no fee to try out.
  • Please read the "TRYOUT INFORMATION PAGE for important details and how to register for the tryout.

COSTS

  • EXTRA program registration is a flat fee (there is no discounted, or early bird, pricing), which includes custom home/away jerseys, a practice jersey, special training opportunities, and the EXTRA Program participation fee.
  • Players who tryout and are offered a position on an EXTRA team, will be required to make a $100 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit within seven (7) calendar days to hold their place on the team. The deposit will be deducted from the amount of the registration fee. The balance of the registration fee will be due approx 30 days after the deposit due date (the exact date will be stated in the registration email parents receive).
  • ALL players participating in any AYSO program must also pay the AYSO Annual Membership Fee ($20), which covers insurance and other resources provided by the national AYSO office. It goes directly to AYSO and is non-refundable, even in the event of a player dropping due to injury. This membership fee applies for ANY/ALL AYSO programs during the membership year, which runs 8/1 - 7/31.
  • Teams sometimes elect to buy balls, bags or warm up apparel or other items at the players’ expense.
  • Many teams also choose to participate in local tournaments before and after the season. All fees associated with these optional tournaments are paid for by the team.

SCHEDULE
  • EXTRA teams will not play other Region 143 teams during the Fall season or participate in All Stars.
  • There will be some travel involved, but the games are generally in Orange County and Long Beach.
  • Games are usually on weekends and there may be games on Sundays.
  • The EXTRA season may begin and end a week before/after the Region’s Core Fall season.
  • Teams will only be eligible for official post-season play if they meet the minimum number of volunteer/referee points during the regular season.

EXTRA PROGRAM COMMITMENT

  • Every EXTRA team shall provide a minimum of three (3) unique certified referees that are active in any of the Region’s AYSO primary programs
  • Player Commitment: Players accepting positions on a Region 143 EXTRA team are selected to that team for the duration of the Membership Year (Aug 1  - July 31), unless a situation arises that results in a tryout being held for the spring soccer season. Players will commit to their teams as their priority non-school activity. It is expected that every player attends each practice and game at the agreed upon times.
  • To satisfy the commitment required by the EXTRA Program, players may not be enrolled and participate in other Club or non-AYSO soccer programs during the EXTRA Program primary season (Aug 1 – Dec 31).

TEAM FORMATION

SELECTION OF PLAYERS
  • Teams are selected by a panel of board members and experienced coaches.
  • All players will be notified if they have made a team or not.
TEAMS
  • The region will determine the number of EXTRA teams based upon the number of EXTRA caliber players identified during tryouts and the availability of qualified coaches.
  • We will not form a team if we do not think it will be competitive
  • We will not form a team if a qualified coach is not available

FALL 2023 TRYOUTS

As of May 7, 2023

We are holding a final tryout to complete the 12U Boys and the 12U Girls teams ONLY. All players born in 2012 are welcome to attend, if you previously registered for an earlier tryout, you do not need to sign up again; otherwise, all players must sign up for the tryout in Sports Connect.

Special note for the 9U Boys (2015) division: We did not have enough players attend tryouts in order to make a determination if a team could be formed. Our plan is to attempt another tryout for this division later this spring. Notice of a tryout will be posted on the website and sent by email. All families who tried out in this division were sent an email on 3/25/23.
Please note that the Region sends some emails through our Sports Connect email platform. These emails are sent to the email associated with your account. If you have previously unsubscribed to Region emails, you may be missing these and other important emails from Region 143.
